Bowdoin Honorand Sells Lichtenstein’s ‘Masterpiece’ to Fund Philanthrophy (New Yorker)

Agnes Gund was president of MoMA from 1991-2002

Philanthropist and patron of the arts Agnes Gund H’12, has sold a classic work of pop art from her private collection for a nine-figure sum to fund her latest philanthropic project, writes Peter Schjeldahl in The New Yorker.

Masterpiece by Roy Lichtenstein, “a painting that for years had hung above the mantel in her Park Avenue apartment,” went for $165,000,000. Gund, president emerita of the Museum of Modern Art, is using $100,000,000 of that to set up the Art for Justice Fund, a criminal justice reform initiative that will be administered by The Ford Foundation.
