The New York Times has undertaken a reporting project following three teenagers in Topeka, Kansas, on their quest to go to college.

For the latest installment, writer Anemona Hartocollis tapped Whitney Soule, Bowdoin’s dean of admissions and financial aid, for insight as the teenagers being profiled in the series weigh what some see as a decision between the intangible value of a college degree versus that of technical certification in a field such as auto mechanics.
