Bowdoin Student Tackles Dementia Care Using ‘Person-Centered’ Approach

Psychology major Julia Mehlman became interested in the idea of “person-centered” dementia care while studying overseas in Scotland.

On her return to Bowdoin, with the help of a professor she set about devising her own curriculum, enabling her to specialize in the study of dementia care—a program that involved Mehlman’s gaining a lot of hands-on experience at a long-term care facility.
