Jessica McCurdy, a co-lead educator in the infant program at the Bowdoin Children’s Center, has been recognized as Child Care Teacher of the Year by the Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation.

This award, the Helene Marks Award, acknowledges “the critical role of child care teachers in providing quality early care and education,” according to the foundation. Teachers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Military bases around the world can apply.

In the award ceremony April 16 in Pennsylvania, McCurdy said she wanted to reinforce the importance of letting children play in their early years of school, and to emphasize the need to provide children with a stable emotional foundation. “Children learn the most academically if they have an emotionally solid foundation,” she said. “Let’s share that with everybody.”
