Scanlon Named Interim Dean for Academic Affairs

Jennifer ScanlonJennifer Scanlon, Bowdoin’s William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of the Humanities in the Gender and Women’s Studies Program and associate dean for faculty, will serve a two-year term as interim dean for academic affairs beginning July 1, 2015. Clayton Rose, who will assume the presidency of Bowdoin on the same day, announced the appointment early Monday in a message shared with the Bowdoin community by President Barry Mills.

“Jen is a highly respected and accomplished scholar and teacher who has a broad understanding of the curriculum, the needs of the faculty, and the student experience,” wrote Rose. “After discussions with Jen and with others at the College, I believe that she is the right person to lead the division of academic affairs during this period.”

Rose said the College will conduct a search for a permanent dean during the 2016-17 academic year.

Scanlon joined the faculty in 2002 and was named associate dean in 2013. She will succeed Cristle Collins Judd, who has served as Bowdoin’s academic dean since 2006. Judd, who was recently named to a senior position at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will step down as dean on June 30, 2015, but will stay on through August to assist Rose and Scanlon with the transition.

“I’m honored to be appointed interim dean for academic affairs, said Scanlon. “Bowdoin College has enhanced my professional life in countless ways, and I look forward, likewise, to supporting the students, the faculty, the staff, and the College, as we move forward together in the next two years.”

I guess this is what comes of being physically as well as mentally fit. Both Dean Scanlon and her husband are regulars at Buck!
