Passive Facebook Users are Increasingly Unhappy (New Yorker)

Frown face

Researchers have been divided about how Facebook affects our emotional state: some studies suggest Facebook makes us lonelier and more depressed, while others say Facebook actually makes us happierThe New Yorker draws from multiple studies to create a distinction between active and passive Facebook users, in which some users are actively engaged in direct interaction, while others simply scroll through newsfeeds.

A 2010 study at Carnegie Mellon found, “when people engaged in direct interaction with others … their feelings of bonding and general social capital increased, while their sense of loneliness decreased.” The opposite effect occurred with the users were passively consuming media.
