A New Twist On Shakespeare (NPR)

Shakespeare128Hamlet’s famous pondering “to be or not to be” is usually presented within a movie, a stage performance, a dramatic reading. Ryan North saw potential for a “Choose Your Own Adventure” novel. It is not out of the ordinary for directors and screenwriters to put their own twist on Shakespeare’s classics (think Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet), but North’s novel gives the reader an opportunity to overturn some of the character’s decisions and plot twists that this famous tragedy takes for granted. At each step of the way readers have a choice, and a different page to turn to depending on their decision. One path completes the original story “for the purists,” another gives Ophelia control over her outdated and formerly tragic destiny. NPR provides a case for innovative adaptation and insight from the author.
