In the New York Times opinion piece “When to Talk to Monsters,” diplomat Christopher Hill ’74 argues that the U.S. should include Syrian president Bashar-al Assad in diplomatic negotiations aimed at ending the Syrian civil war, in spite of Assad’s war crimes.

Currently dean of the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, Hill has served as U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Korea, Poland and Macedonia, and as 25th Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
