Joan Benoit Samuelson ’79 — “Joanie” to her friends and fans the world over — is adding a diamond to her collection of gold medals. The baseball diamond at Fenway, that is. Benoit Samuelson is to throw out the first pitch at the Red Sox game later today, in advance of running in the Boston Marathon Monday on what will be the 30th anniversary of her record-breaking win there.

The Bowdoin Daily Sun has learned Joanie has coined the phrase “30 in 30” for the race, as she attempts to keep her time within 30 minutes of her 1983 triumph. To meet that goal, Joanie would have to run the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 52 minutes.

Recently, Joanie spoke with Runners World magazine about the course her life has taken.
