Bowdoin College has announced the appointment of Tim Ryan ’98 as Ashmead White Director of Athletics.

Ryan, who has served as Interim Director of Athletics for the last nine months, was selected following a national search.

“Members of our community know that an exceptional liberal arts education and a great intercollegiate athletic experience are a powerful combination that prepares young women and men for a meaningful and enjoyable life,” said President Barry Mills and Dean of Students Tim Foster in a letter to the College community.

“With Tim’s leadership, we know athletics at Bowdoin will continue to thrive, and we look forward to working together with him on behalf of our students and Polar Bears everywhere.”

A member of the Class of 1998, Ryan began his career in investment and commercial banking. In 2005, the Wells, Maine native changed his career focus and decided to pursue his passion for education and athletics. He returned to Bowdoin in the summer of 2005 as an assistant football coach, and in 2007, he was named associate athletic director for operations.

In that role, Ryan managed the department budget, supervised staff, served on numerous College committees, and represented the department on several capital and major maintenance projects. He also worked closely and effectively with a variety of College departments, including Admissions, Development and Alumni Relations, Facilities Management, IT, Human Resources, and Communications and Public Affairs. He assumed the interim Director of Athletics role in the summer of 2012.

As a student at Bowdoin, Ryan was a Dean’s List student, a tri-captain of the 1997 football team, and a member of the Residential Life staff. Ryan earned his master’s degree in higher education administration at Drexel University in 2011.  As director of athletics, Ryan will oversee 31 intercollegiate varsity sports, three club sports, and general fitness at the College.

“My experience as a student at Bowdoin left me with a firm belief in the value of the Division III athletic experience,” said Ryan. “An understanding of the complementary nature of academics and athletics in a learning community is well established at Bowdoin and I am honored to assume the responsibility of serving as Director of Athletics. I want to thank President Mills, Dean Foster and the search committee for their support. I look forward to working with colleagues from across our campus to support the academic and athletic interests of our students.”
