Your Online Habits at Work Could be Illegal (Mashable)

If employers really wanted to prevent their workers from online shopping, sending personal emails or checking social media sites while on the job, they could, theoretically, threaten them by citing federal law, according to a new study by two Boston College professors.

Professors Stephanie Greene and Christine Neylon O’Brien argue in a paper published in the American Business Law Journal that the common online behavior of many employees who use computers at work could violate the 1986 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

“The CFAA … makes it a crime to ‘access a computer without authorization or exceed authorized access … from [a] protected computer.’ Based on the law’s own definitions, a ‘protected computer’ is virtually any device with a microprocessor and a network connection,” Mashable reports.
