Video: Behind the Scenes of ‘Pete Seeger: The Complete Bowdoin Concert 1960’

This new mini-documentary takes a look at the making of the historic double CD set of legendary folk musician Pete Seeger’s full concert at Bowdoin in 1960. Recorded more than 50 years ago on WBOR’s state of the art equipment, the tapes used to make this album are among the very best in existence of Seeger live. Joel Sherman ’61 and many on campus assisted Smithsonian Folkways in researching the history of Seeger’s Bowdoin performance for this album project.

Pete Seeger: The Complete Bowdoin Concert 1960 is available through the Bowdoin College Bookstore, and through Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

This is the prime period of Pete Seeger’s music; to catch him live at that point, playing, this well recorded, is kind of an amazing historical item.

I recently bought the CD from the bookstore.
Wonderful stuff for old folkies like myself.
With my wife Joanne, I saw Pete in a “nightclub” of sorts on Cape Cod around ’59 or ’60. We walked in as he was finishing a song. Pete exclaimed that he was delighted to see us (even ‘though we nearly interruptedhis performance), escorted us to a table near the stage, and joined all of us in the audience in another of his marvelous sing-alongs.
Pete had the knack of making you feel like a friend at a houseparty…not just a member of the audience.

Can’t wait to get this CD! Pete’s music has been woven into the life of our family for several generations. My parents met at a Pete Seeger concert in the ’50’s in NYC- during the black listed years. I grew up listening to his music, and my daughters did as well, attending their first concert when they were 4. Last week was Pete’s 93rd birthday and my husband and I went to a musical celebration at a local folk music venue here in Ann Arbor. There is just nothing like Pete’s music to revitalize hope in the power of the human spirit. May this next generation take notice!!!
