Video: Remembering ‘The Godfather of Rap’ Gil Scott-Heron (NPR)

Though Gil Scott-Heron dismissed the label “godfather of rap” that was often used to describe him, there is little doubt that his work profoundly influenced the entire hip-hop and rap music tradition, from its very beginning to the present. Legendary poet and spoken-word artist, musician, and author Scott-Heron, best known for his seminal 1970 piece “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” died on Friday in New York at age 62.
