Donning ‘Throwback’ Uniforms in Honor of Men’s Hockey Alumni Weekend

The Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey team will don “throwback” uniforms in honor of Alumni Weekend at Sidney J. Watson Arena this Friday and Saturday, January 28-29.

The Polar Bears (11-3-0), ranked fifth in the latest Division III poll, will host ninth-ranked Williams at 7 p.m. Friday and defending NESCAC champion Middlebury at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Live coverage will be available for both games via video webcast and live statistics. All regular-season games at Watson Arena are free of charge and no tickets are required. Doors open one hour prior to game time each day.

‘Record Level of Stress’ Among College First-Years (New York Times)

A recent national survey of more than 200,000 incoming first-years finds that the percentage of students who describe themselves as “below average” when it comes to emotional health is on the rise, while those who rated their emotional health “above average” declined 12 points from where that figure was in 1985.

Trustee Gerald Chertavian ’87 and his national non-profit Year Up, a one-year training program that prepares young urban adults for life and work in the technology-driven society of the 21st century, are highlighted in a New York Times opinion piece examining how “the lack of exposure to ‘professional culture’ has kept low-income youths out of the work force.”

Video: Biathlon World Cup’s Wicked Cool Nightclub of Ice

Biathlon World Cup host city Fort Kent, Maine, is playing it cool as it prepares for February’s activities (not a difficult task given all the snow and Arctic air that have blown into Maine of late) and that includes constructing a nightclub out of 400-pound ice cubes harvested from nearby Black Lake.
