Each year, every first-year student at Bowdoin visits the second floor of Hawthorne-Longfellow Hall to meet the president, hear a little bit about the history of the College, and to sign the Matriculation Book. Only then are they “official Bowdoin students.”

Video: Karen Mills Pushes for Small Business Jobs Bill in Portland (WCSH)

Karen Mills, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration and wife of President Barry Mills, delivered the keynote address before commercial lenders from 25 states at the SBA-sponsored East Coast Conference in Portland Monday. Mills is pushing for passage of the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act once the Senate returns to session in September. The bill includes a $30 billion lending fund for small businesses, $12 billion in tax breaks and an increase in SBA loan limits.

Bowdoin Field Hockey Ranked 11th in Preseason Division III Poll

The Bowdoin College field hockey team is ranked 11th in the nation according to a Preseason Poll released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The Polar Bears, who finished the 2009 campaign with a record of 10-6, received a pair of first-place votes in the poll.

Skipping Class? We Know. We’re Tracking You. (NPR)

Students at Northern Arizona University are not happy with a new system that electronically records classroom and lecture hall attendance. University officials say attendance matters and their new tracking system is a great way to improve graduation rates. Students see it as a bit too much “Big Brother.”
