For his decades of varied and distinguished service to the College, Bob Lakin, a member of the Class of 1968, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Alumni Service Award.
The award recognizes a record of exemplary service to the College, rather than a single act, and is the highest honor given by the Alumni Council.
“Volunteering for Bowdoin is really all about the people,” Lakin says. “Meeting and making friends with alumni from a range of classes that I would otherwise never know is just tremendous. The staff and administration are incredibly friendly and supportive. And, of course, the students are so talented and engaging. At the end of the day, it’s really all about helping them and that’s what is so rewarding.”
“The Awards Committee of the Council was particularly struck by Bob’s tireless efforts for Bowdoin, helping to raise funds to ensure that the Bowdoin experience remains a reality for generations to follow,” says Alumni Council Awards Committee Chair Dan Hart ’95.
In addition to his own generous and faithful support of the Alumni Fund, he established the Lakin Family Scholarship Fund, ensuring an enduring legacy of support.
“His exemplary work leading our Alumni Fund, his steady hand as class agent for the Class of 1968, and his work on the Bowdoin Campaign steering committee are only a few of the ways Bob has distinguished himself on the College’s behalf,” says Director of Alumni Relations Rodie Flaherty Lloyd ’80.
Lakin, of Wellesley, Mass., has undertaken leadership roles ranging from service on the Presidential Search Committee to the Bowdoin Alumni and Schools Interviewing Committee (BASIC).
“His loyalty to Bowdoin and his commitment to the core values that characterize the Bowdoin community are inspirational. “
A government major, Lakin was active on the sailing and squash teams, and went on to earn a law degree at Boston University. His son, Thomas C. Lakin, is a member of the Class of 2007.
First established in 1932 as the Alumni Achievement Award and renamed the Alumni Service Award in 1953, the award is made annually to the person whose volunteer services to Bowdoin, in the opinion of alumni, as expressed to the Alumni Council, most deserve recognition.
The Alumni Service Award will be presented Saturday, June 1, 2013, during Reunion Convocation.
