Some say shopping to relieve emotional distress is “cheaper than a therapist.” But when it comes to shopping, there are three types of overindulging, two of which reveal more underlying problems than those of your average “shopaholic” and can worsen feelings of sadness. Shopaholics buy shoes because they like having, say, new shoes. The other two types of shoppers might view a pair of new shoes as an indicator of success, or worse, as a substitute for emotional connection.
