New research out of Princeton University tested mice in stressful situations to determine whether consistent exercise (in this case, running on a wheel) was beneficial in combatting anxiety. After being placed in cold water, mice that had had prolonged exercise training calmed down much faster than mice who with no access to a wheel. Additionally, the researchers also found that the exercising mice’s brains were filled with far more excitable new neurons than those of the sedentary mice. The New York Times reveals more about these beneficial effects of exercise.
