After spending a week in January volunteering at the Preble Street Resource Center in Portland, students Olivia Paone ’15 and Phui Yi Kong ’15 published an editorial in the Times Record describing their experience.
The two were co-leaders of group of students that focused on hunger and homelessness for an Alternative Winter Break program, run through Bowdoin’s McKeen Center.
As part of their duties, the Bowdoin students administered surveys to homeless clients. “Surveyors found an overwhelmingly high caseworker approval rating,” Paone and Kong write. “From speaking with clients, we learned many are highly appreciative of having contact with caseworkers, and have a high level of trust in their relationship. …The social commitment Preble Street Resource Center has is nothing short of life supporting. ” Read more.
