The city of Kaunas in Lithuania commissioned artist Jolanta Šmidtienė to create a holiday decoration for the city that would not involve killing plants. Šmidtienė came up with the idea of using 40,000 used plastic bottles to create an illuminated, 40-foot tree, Grist reports. Plus, the holiday decoration was relatively affordable because all the material was salvaged from trash.
